During college, students are independently responsible for their own finances, including pursuing financial assistance, monitoring billing statements and accounts, and determining whether or not they should take on a part-time job. Each student and family has their own unique financial situation. UCSB provides many services to students regardless of their situation to help students manage their finances. We encourage you to talk with your student about finances, working while in school, credit card use, and spending habits before they arrive on campus.

Billing, Accounts Receivable, and Collections (BARC)

BARC maintains students' monthly bill statements, including registration fees, University-owned housing charges, and Student Health charges. BARC issues an E-Bill notice to your student's University email; statements are not mailed to students' homes. Students can access BARC statements on-line at MyBarc.

Students are held responsible for all BARC charges and need to create a BARC Parent User Account or waive their right to billing privacy for someone else to access their account. Encourage your student to pay close attention to activity on their BARC account as there are penalties for missing payments (such as being dropped from courses or blocked from registering for classes).

Working & Work-Study

Career Services manages Handshake, an online listing of available part-time, full-time, internship and on-campus positions for students. Most on-campus employers allow students flexibility in their schedules and prioritization of class times, coursework, or examinations.

The Work-Study Program allows students who have demonstrated financial need to acquire on-campus jobs as part of their financial aid package. The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships determines if a student is eligible.
